Daggerford - The Breathing World
Occupations (Classes) in Daggerford
MAGICAL TEMLPLATE POSSIBILITIES
Arcane Magic – Magic is not uncommon for Daggerford. A number of wizards and mages live within the city. One is a powerful wizard that has been given residence in one of the towers of the outer wall and serves as a defender of the city. It is rumored that The Duke’s sister is a arcane spellcaster of some sort. There are several illusionists within the city. They ply their trade especially during celebrations where they are paid by the city to put on shows for the people. Witches do not usually make their status known publicly as some religious groups are known to hunt them. If discovered they can be shunned or evicted from the city as their loyalties are always in question. Necromancers are not welcome and will be escorted from the city immediately if it is discovered. It is illegal to ply that trade within the walls of the city and both major religious denominations take offense at its use. In general the citizens have no issue against arcane types but assaults or crimes committed with magic will be punished sometimes more severely than those without magic because of the potential danger these individuals pose. So arcanists, consider yourself warned.
Divine Magic – The people of the city are also familiar with divine magic as well. The church of Solastian blesses Daggerford with light, warmth and fertile crops. The church of Soothotcha serve as healers and teachers of healing and herblore. The two faiths seem to work well together. The city has seen its share of cults and other sects attempting to subvert the faith and prayers of this outlying city. The citizens take a dim view of disturbing their way of life and have thrown these heretics out of town or in jail.
Nature Magic – With The Black Mire and the Laugh Woods so close, Daggerford sees its share of nature magic, elves, fey and all manner for Eldran. Some people accept them without issue, others do not trust these individuals who’s allegiance may be more to nature than to the city itself. Since the city has been rebuilt, efforts of the Elves, Stonach and Ghim have help to make the city less “human” in its consumption of resources and such. This has gone a long way in soothing the Eldran, but tensions rise from time to time and the city deals with it as best it can.
“Class Templates” within Daggerford"
Archer – For a town on the fringes archers are a profession in demand. Either making bows and arrows, serving on guard duty on the walls or caravans many people like to make sure that there is a skilled bowman on their side
Assassin – those that hire quietly for money and can make it look like an accident make many people nervous. Daggerford isn’t quite large enough to really support this kind of profession. Also the attitudes of the community would not be welcoming if this were know. It would not be difficult to imagine someone who plies this trade leaving somewhere that has become hostile to them and they have hidden themselves in the community of Daggerford. As long as someone follows the law and respects the rights of others, people don’t dig into another’s history or past.
Bard – Bards are known to make a living within the city. As trade increases there is the need for those who are weary of the road to find distraction. Stories and songs work well to uplift the spirits many. With both the road and river traffic stories can be found and collected by these individuals. With the fall of the Yan-ti lore and strange things are not unknown for this corner of the kingdom.
Berserker – the talents of these individuals do not normally endear themselves to hard working folks. The tribesman that live on the fringes are known to have these talents. People have suffered under their assaults. Do not be surprised that if people discover your background then they start becoming more aloof around you.
Duelist – public duels are only sanctioned within the confines of The Arena with blunted weapons and observed by a member of the court. They are also opportunities for employment during The Arena fight days to perform and make a showing to the audience. Some work can also be found as a mercenary or bodyguard
Fighter – many opportunities exist for the fighter. Work for the military, the militia, guard duty, or mercenary work is possible. Any job that needs someone strong and able to apply force to a situation would be a fine opportunity for a fighter.
Gambler – with the new trade and travelers moving through daggerford there are opportunities for the clever gambler. Cards, dice and other games can be found in taverns within the city. More where the traders and merchants stop than where the locals frequent. Bets at The Arena are also possible. Just remember cheaters are not looked on kindly.
Gladiator – Within the town is The Arena. It was originally going to be set up as outdoor theater until there was an unfortunate incident with a couple backers. Instead one a clever businessman from a southern kingdom took it over and turned it into a weekly event. While there is lots of bloodshed rarely does anyone die. Members of the order of Soothatcha are hired to be on had if something gets out of hand. Mostly it is weapons combat, slapstick performers and the spectator combat of the Gladiator. The weapons are blunted so as not be delivering killing blows but the combatants do take a pounding. While the weather is good a living can be made entertaining the masses.
Hunter – Living on the fringes of the Feol Kingdom out in “the wildes” as those closer to the center of the kingdom refer to it, the hunter can make a living as guide and provider. Small communities rely on them for providing additional food. Others make use of their skill in the woods and help keeping the community safe from wild beasts and critters. While less comfortable within the city walls they are called upon by caravans and hired by adventurers to go poking about in old ruins.
Knight – While on the edge of the Feolands, nobility still rules the city. Knights are trained by the Duke to protect his lands. Sometimes traveling knights have to prove themselves before being accepted by a new lord. Others perhaps have fallen from grace and have to make their way in the world. If there is a higher degree of discretion or coordination of resources needed then a knight may be needed. The Duke is known to employ a number of them for various reasons.
Mechanic – One of the new businesses in Daggerford is The Dragonworks. These are a collection of engineers that ply their trade in clockwork and other mechanical devices for the city. There is rumored to be some crossover work between them and The Emporium in creating magically enhanced mechanical devices. The Dragonworks does some work for the city itself and other work for individual projects. A clever mechanic could make a name for themselves in such a new enterprise.
Monk – Small numbers of these individuals travel the land, testing their abilities and improving their talents. Like any warrior the may find employment in a variety of jobs. Also with The Arena work can be found in performing for the crowd. While not showy like gladiators their ability to take a beating and do damage with their hands alone is impressive.
